67. Just do it! 말고...

One of the hardest things to hear as a parent or teacher is, "I can't do it." Sometimes it's followed by, "It's too hard," or "It's doing my head in!" In that moment, it can be tempting to reply, "Just do it." After all, we want children to become independent and resilient. But in my experience, that response isn't always the most helpful.

When a child feels overwhelmed, they often don't need more pressure—they need more support. Instead of expecting them to tackle the whole task on their own, try making it a little simpler. Break it into smaller steps. Shorten the activity. Give them an example of what you're looking for. Often, once they experience a small success, their confidence begins to grow and they're happy to carry on by themselves.

One strategy I really like is turning "you" into "we". Instead of saying, "You need to finish this," try saying, "Let's have a look at it together." Sit beside your child rather than standing over them. Work through the first part as a team. You're not doing the work for them—you're showing them how to approach it. That small change in language and attitude can make a huge difference.

Every child needs support from time to time, and asking for help is not a sign of weakness. With the right encouragement, even the most frustrated child can rediscover their confidence. So if your child is struggling with homework or learning at the moment, don't give up. Take a step back, work together, and celebrate the small victories along the way. Have you ever found a strategy that helped your child move from "I can't do it" to "I did it!"? I'd love to hear your ideas in the comments. And if you'd like some extra support, give us a shout—we'd be delighted to help.
