15. Are honours still relevant?

So, David Beckham has now officially become Sir David Beckham—but it raises a bigger question. Do honours like knighthoods and MBEs still hold meaning today, or are they just traditions we’ve outgrown? Recently, I brought this topic up with my students during a Votes for Schools session, and their reactions showed just how divided opinions can be.

About 60% of them felt that honours absolutely still matter. They argued that Beckham’s charity work, influence, and leadership deserved national recognition beyond his celebrity status. In their eyes, these titles are a way for society to show appreciation for meaningful contributions that go beyond simply being famous.
학생들 중 약 60%는 이런 영예가 여전히 중요하다고 생각했습니다. 그들은 베컴의 자선 활동, 영향력, 리더십이 단순한 유명세 이상의 국가적 인정을 받을 가치가 있다고 말했습니다. 이 타이틀은 사회가 의미 있는 기여를 인정하는 하나의 방법이라는 것이죠.

But not everyone agreed. Others felt honours like knighthoods have lost their relevance, especially when given to people who already have fame, wealth, and influence. From that perspective, adding another high-status label doesn’t change anything—and may even make the tradition feel disconnected from modern values.
하지만 모든 학생들이 동의한 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 학생들은 이미 유명하고 영향력이 있는 사람에게 이런 영예를 주는 것이 더 이상 의미가 없다고 생각했습니다. 이런 관점에서 보면, 또 다른 칭호를 추가하는 것은 별다른 변화를 만들지 못할 뿐 아니라 오히려 현대적 가치와 동떨어진 전통처럼 느껴질 수도 있습니다.

Maybe the real conversation isn’t about the title itself, but about what we choose to celebrate as a society today. Should honours evolve to recognise more diverse forms of contribution? Should they highlight ordinary people doing extraordinary things? Whatever the answer, David Beckham’s new title certainly gives us something to think about.
