50. Teaching Shakespeare’s Othello

I love how the classroom becomes a shared investigation. Students question motives, challenge each other’s interpretations, and search for hidden clues in the language. I’m not just the teacher delivering information — I’m a co-detective, standing with them at a centuries-old crime scene, trying to piece together what really happened and why.

With my Year Nine students, we laughed at the dramatic irony, gasped at the shocking twists, and still took seriously the themes of prejudice, love, and manipulation. They were quick to spot how easily Othello is isolated and how cleverly Iago exploits every weakness. Their reactions were thoughtful, honest, and often surprisingly insightful.
