65. Talking on vacation (holiday)

One of the best things about speaking English is that you never know where it might lead. While my family and I were on holiday in Poland, we happened to meet two lovely young women from South Korea. I went over to say hello and start a conversation in English. At first, they seemed a little nervous and understandably quite reserved. I think they were wondering whether their English would be good enough.

But within a minute or two, everything changed. They relaxed, smiled, and the conversation began to flow naturally. We talked about travel, Korea, England, and our experiences abroad. We laughed together, shared stories, and made a genuine connection. By the end of our conversation, it was obvious that their English was more than good enough. The only thing holding them back at the beginning had been a lack of confidence.

As an English teacher, I've seen this so many times. People often underestimate their own ability because they're afraid of making mistakes. The truth is that you don't need perfect English to have a meaningful conversation. You just need the courage to say that first "Hello". Most people are patient, friendly, and genuinely happy that you're making the effort to speak with them.

So here's my challenge for you. The next time you're on holiday, travelling, or simply happen to meet someone from another country, don't let the opportunity pass you by. Start a conversation in English and see where it leads. You might make a new friend, learn something fascinating, or simply discover that your English is much better than you thought. Have you ever started a conversation with a stranger in English? How did it go? I'd love to hear your story in the comments below. You can do it!
