12. Teaching critical thinking using votes for schools

Can young children really learn critical thinking skills? Absolutely. Working with early learners has shown me that they are far more capable than many people assume. Through simple guidance and meaningful conversations, children can begin developing the ability to question, analyze, and form their own ideas from a surprisingly young age.

One tool that has made a remarkable difference in my classroom is the Votes for Schools program. By introducing a topic, presenting a range of opinions, and encouraging open debate, the program empowers students to explore ideas freely. We never tell them what to think; instead, we give them space to discover and evaluate perspectives on their own.

What continually surprises me is just how thoughtful young learners can be. Whether they’re discussing topics like skincare, gender, sports, or anything in between, they consistently offer sharp insights and strong perspectives. Their curiosity and willingness to engage deeply demonstrate that critical thinking isn’t limited by age—it simply needs the right environment to grow.

저를 계속 놀라게 하는 것은 어린 학습자들이 얼마나 깊이 있게 생각할 수 있는가 하는 점입니다. 스킨케어, 젠더, 스포츠 등 어떤 주제든 그들은 항상 날카로운 통찰력과 뚜렷한 관점을 보여줍니다. 그들의 호기심과 적극적인 참여는 비판적 사고가 나이에 의해 제한되는 것이 아니라, 성장할 수 있는 올바른 환경이 필요하다는 것을 증명합니다.

Perhaps the most rewarding part is that their votes contribute to national results, helping them feel that their voices truly matter. When we trust children with real discussions and real decisions, they rise to the occasion every time. If you want to see authentic critical thinking in action, start with kids—they will impress you again and again.
