21. Day 4: Tell me why, you don’t like Mondays?

Despite the old song asking why anyone dislikes Mondays, ours turned out to be surprisingly wonderful. We began the day visiting my daughter’s school, where we walked through the halls, chatted with the staff, and met several of the pupils. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and it felt good to see where she spends so much of her time learning and growing.

노래에서는 왜 월요일이 싫은지 묻지만, 우리에게는 뜻밖에도 아주 멋진 월요일이었습니다. 우리는 딸의 학교를 방문하며 복도를 걸어 다니고, 선생님들과 이야기하고, 여러 학생들을 만났습니다. 분위기는 따뜻하고 편안했고, 그녀가 많은 시간을 보내며 배우고 성장하는 공간을 직접 볼 수 있어 좋았습니다.

When we returned home, she was eager to show me some of her schoolwork. We looked at a “Votes for Schools” topic, which this time focused on the number of flags in the area. She shared her thoughts on flags, identity, and nationalism with surprising maturity. During a short break, she even grabbed one of my dad’s guitars from the wall and strummed a few chords—quite impressively, I might add.

집으로 돌아오자 그녀는 자신의 공부 내용을 보여 주고 싶어 했습니다. 우리는 이번 주제였던 ‘지역의 깃발 수’에 대해 살펴보았고, 그녀는 깃발과 정체성, 민족주의에 대한 자신의 의견을 성숙하게 설명했습니다. 쉬는 시간에는 아빠의 기타를 벽에서 꺼내 가볍게 연주했는데, 생각보다 훨씬 잘해서 깜짝 놀랐습니다.

After the musical interlude, it was time to get back to studying. She focused well, and before long the afternoon had passed. To end the day on a fun note, we headed to Meadowhall, where she went to watch a film with my daughter—Zootopia. They both came out with huge smiles, clearly having enjoyed every moment.

잠깐의 음악 시간이 끝난 뒤 다시 공부에 집중할 시간이 왔습니다. 그녀는 꽤 집중력 있게 공부했고, 어느새 오후가 훌쩍 지나가 버렸습니다. 하루를 즐겁게 마무리하기 위해 우리는 메도우홀로 갔고, 그녀는 제 딸과 함께 영화 ‘주토피아’를 보았습니다. 두 아이 모두 환하게 웃으며 나와, 영화가 정말 재미있었던 것이 분명했습니다.

By the time we finally made it home, the excitement of the day had caught up with them. Both of them were clearly exhausted and more than ready for bed. It was a full day—busy, heartwarming, and memorable—and certainly not a Monday anyone could dislike.

집에 도착했을 때쯤에는 하루 동안의 즐거움이 모두 쏟아져 나온 듯 아이들은 이미 지쳐 있었습니다. 두 아이 모두 잠자리에 들 준비가 완전히 되어 있었죠. 분주하면서도 따뜻하고 기억에 남는 하루였고, 누구도 싫어할 수 없는 그런 월요일이었습니다.
