25. Day 8: Work Experience

Do you remember what you did for your first work experience? I certainly do—I worked in an MP’s office back in 1997, and it taught me so much about responsibility, professionalism, and how the world really operates. That memory made today especially exciting, as my daughter and her friend had the chance to take part in their own first work experience.

They spent the day at my friend’s media company in Chesterfield, stepping into a lively and creative environment. Their tasks were hands-on and authentic: setting up gear and cameras, arranging scenes, and even trying their hand at a bit of directing. It wasn’t just an observation day—they were genuinely part of the workflow.

One of their biggest tasks was taking professional photos of the team for the company’s soon-to-be-launched website. They approached it with real focus and enthusiasm, and the staff were impressed by how quickly they adapted. For a first experience, they handled themselves incredibly well.

Why is work experience such a good idea? Because it builds confidence, teaches practical skills, and helps young people think seriously about what they might—or might not—want to do in the future. Judging by their excitement afterward, I think today gave them exactly that. They had a fantastic time, and I couldn’t be prouder.

직업 체험이 왜 좋을까요? 자신감을 키우고, 실질적인 기술을 배우며, 앞으로 하고 싶은 일과 하지 않을 일을 진지하게 생각할 기회를 주기 때문입니다. 오늘 두 아이가 보여준 모습과 끝난 뒤의 반응을 보면, 그 모든 것을 제대로 얻은 하루였던 듯합니다. 정말 멋진 시간을 보냈고, 저는 더없이 자랑스러웠습니다.
