Are English schools stricter than Korean schools? This is a question that many Korean parents genuinely ask me. There’s a common curiosity about how discipline works in England and whether it differs significantly from what they’re used to in Korea.

A lot of people assume that schools in England are more relaxed or freestyle. From the outside, uniforms may look simpler, classes may seem less rigid, and students might appear more casual in how they interact with teachers.

많은 사람들은 영국 학교가 더 자유롭고 느슨할 것이라고 생각합니다. 겉으로 보기에는 교복이 단순해 보이고, 수업 분위기도 덜 엄격해 보이며, 학생들이 선생님과 비교적 편하게 소통하는 것처럼 보이기도 합니다.

However, when it comes to discipline, most English schools follow a very clear system. First, a student receives a warning. If the behavior continues, there is a consequence, parents are informed, and eventually the student may be given detention.

하지만 생활지도 측면에서는 대부분의 영국 학교가 매우 명확한 시스템을 따릅니다. 먼저 경고를 받고, 문제가 계속되면 불이익이 주어지며, 부모에게 연락이 가고, 마지막으로는 방과 후 벌칙인 디텐션이 부과될 수 있습니다.

Detention often happens on the same day or within the following week and usually lasts about an hour. So while English schools may appear relaxed on the surface, in my experience, they can actually be stricter than what I remember from my own school days in Korea.

디텐션은 보통 당일이나 다음 주 안에 바로 이루어지며, 대개 한 시간 정도 지속됩니다. 그래서 겉보기에는 영국 학교가 느슨해 보일 수 있지만, 제 경험상으로는 오히려 제가 기억하는 한국 학교보다 더 엄격한 경우도 많습니다.
