36. Teaching Shakespeare’s Macbeth

This week, I started teaching Macbeth by William Shakespeare, a play that explores ambition and the dangerous desire for too much power. At the beginning of the story, Macbeth is presented as a brave and loyal hero, admired for his courage on the battlefield.

이번 주에 나는 윌리엄 셰익스피어의 『맥베스』를 가르치기 시작했다. 이 작품은 야망과 과도한 권력 욕망이 얼마나 위험한지를 다룬 희곡이다. 이야기 초반의 맥베스는 전장에서 용맹함을 인정받는 충성스러운 영웅으로 등장한다.

However, everything begins to change when he hears a prophecy claiming that he could become king. That single idea takes root in his mind and slowly transforms him. From that moment on, his thoughts, actions, and sense of right and wrong begin to shift.

하지만 그가 왕이 될 수 있다는 예언을 듣는 순간 모든 것이 달라지기 시작한다. 그 한 가지 생각이 그의 머릿속에 자리 잡으면서, 그의 사고방식과 행동, 옳고 그름에 대한 기준이 점점 변해 간다.

The play explores several powerful themes, starting with choice and fate. Are we truly in control of our future, or is it already decided for us? Another major theme is guilt, as Macbeth’s bad choices leave him frightened, paranoid, and deeply unhappy.

이 작품은 선택과 운명이라는 강력한 주제를 탐구한다. 우리는 스스로 미래를 선택하는 걸까, 아니면 이미 정해진 길을 따라가고 있는 걸까? 또 다른 중요한 주제는 죄책감으로, 잘못된 선택들이 맥베스를 두려움과 불안, 불행 속에 빠뜨린다.

Finally, the play examines appearance versus reality — the idea that things are not always what they seem. As you read, it’s worth asking yourself: did Macbeth truly choose his actions, or was he controlled by fate? And what about you — what are you reading these days, and are you enjoying it?

마지막으로 이 작품은 겉모습과 진실의 대비를 다룬다. 보이는 것이 항상 진실은 아니라는 것이다. 읽으면서 이런 질문을 던져 보자. 맥베스는 자신의 선택을 한 것일까, 아니면 운명에 조종당한 것일까? 그리고 여러분은 요즘 무엇을 읽고 있는가? 그 독서를 즐기고 있는가?
