39. Getting to school in the UK

How do children in the UK usually get to school? In primary school, there is often a school within walking distance of home. However, sometimes that school is full, or parents choose a different one they feel is a better fit for their child.

영국 아이들은 보통 어떻게 학교에 갈까? 초등학교의 경우 집에서 걸어갈 수 있는 거리에 학교가 있는 경우가 많다. 하지만 정원이 차 있거나, 부모가 더 적합하다고 생각하는 다른 학교를 선택하기도 한다.

For secondary school, things are a bit different. Because cities in United Kingdom are generally less densely built than those in South Korea, some travelling is usually required. My daughter leaves the house about an hour before her first lesson to catch a regular public bus.

중등학교에 가게 되면 상황이 조금 달라진다. 영국의 도시는 한국보다 밀집도가 낮은 편이라 통학에 이동이 필요한 경우가 많다. 우리 딸은 첫 수업 한 시간 전에 집을 나서서 번호가 있는 일반 시내버스를 탄다.

I think she secretly enjoys the extra phone time on the bus. Some children are lucky enough to have a dedicated school bus, while others are even luckier and get driven door to door by their parents. We only do that when the weather is truly awful.

아마도 딸은 버스에서 보내는 추가적인 휴대폰 시간을 은근히 즐기는 것 같다. 어떤 아이들은 스쿨버스를 탈 수 있고, 또 어떤 아이들은 부모가 집 앞에서 학교 앞까지 데려다주는 행운을 누리기도 한다. 우리는 날씨가 정말 안 좋을 때만 그렇게 한다.

When I was at school, I had a very long commute, but I didn’t mind it at all. I loved looking out of the bus window, listening to my Walkman, or having deep conversations with friends. It was the pre-smartphone era. How did you get to school?
