41. Burns Night 2026

I took my Korean wife and our daughter out to celebrate Burns Night in 2026, where we sat down together to eat the traditional Scottish meal of haggis, neeps, and tatties. It felt like a nice way to share a bit of Scottish culture as a family.

2026년 번즈 나이트를 맞아 한국인 아내와 딸을 데리고 전통적인 스코틀랜드 음식인 해기스, 니프스, 태티스를 먹으러 나갔다. 가족과 함께 스코틀랜드 문화를 나눌 수 있는 좋은 기회처럼 느껴졌다.

If you’re not familiar with the dish, haggis comes from sheep, neeps is the Scottish word for parsnips, and tatties simply means potatoes. It sounds unusual to some people, but it’s a classic combination that’s deeply tied to the celebration.

이 음식이 익숙하지 않다면, 해기스는 양으로 만든 음식이고, 니프스는 파스닙을 뜻하는 스코틀랜드식 표현이며, 태티스는 감자를 의미한다. 다소 낯설게 들릴 수 있지만, 번즈 나이트와 깊이 연결된 전통 음식이다.

I thought it was really tasty, and my wife agreed — she genuinely enjoyed it. Our daughter, however, wasn’t completely convinced by the traditional plate, though she was much happier with a haggis burger instead.

Burns Night is also connected to poetry and music. The song Auld Lang Syne is sung all over the world, and the words were written by Robert Burns himself. With that in mind, it felt like a fitting way to say Happy New Year.
