42. Teaching Jekyll and Hyde

Right now, I’m teaching The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde to my GCSE English Literature class here in England, and honestly, I’m really getting into it. It’s one of those texts that becomes more interesting every time you teach it.

지금 나는 영국에서 GCSE 영어 문학 수업으로 『지킬 박사와 하이드 씨의 이상한 사건』을 가르치고 있는데, 솔직히 말하면 점점 더 빠져들고 있다. 가르칠수록 새롭게 보이는 점이 많은 작품이다.

We’re exploring some big themes, starting with duality — the idea that everyone has both a good side and a darker side. We also look at reputation and respectability in Victorian society, and how much pressure there was to appear morally upright at all times.

우리는 먼저 이중성이라는 큰 주제를 다룬다. 누구나 선한 면과 어두운 면을 동시에 가지고 있다는 생각이다. 또한 빅토리아 시대 사회에서 평판과 체면이 얼마나 중요했는지, 도덕적으로 보이는 것이 왜 그렇게 큰 압박이었는지도 살펴본다.

Another key focus is science versus morality. When curiosity and ambition cross a dangerous line, what happens next? The students really get stuck into questions like whether Hyde is something Jekyll creates, or something he simply releases.

또 다른 핵심 주제는 과학과 도덕의 충돌이다. 호기심과 야망이 위험한 선을 넘을 때 어떤 일이 벌어질까? 학생들은 하이드가 지킬에 의해 만들어진 존재인지, 아니면 원래 있던 것이 풀려난 것인지 같은 질문에 깊이 빠져든다.

We’re analysing Robert Louis Stevenson’s language, tracking tension and symbolism, and looking at how mystery is built chapter by chapter. It’s a challenging and thought-provoking book, and the class discussions have been brilliant — which is exactly why it’s such a pleasure to teach. What are you reading these days?
