56: My Favourite Students
For the past twenty years, I have had the privilege of teaching thousands of students. Seventeen of those years were spent teaching English in South Korea, and for the last three years I have continued my teaching journey in England. Working with students from different cultures and backgrounds has taught me many lessons, but one thing has remained constant: the students who leave the biggest impression on me are often those with kind hearts. While academic achievement is important, I have always found the greatest joy in teaching students who treat others with respect, empathy, and consideration.
지난 20년 동안 수천 명의 학생들을 가르칠 수 있는 특권을 누려 왔습니다. 그중 17년은 한국에서 영어를 가르쳤고, 지난 3년은 영국에서 교육 여정을 이어가고 있습니다. 서로 다른 문화와 배경을 가진 학생들과 함께하며 많은 것을 배웠지만, 한 가지는 변함이 없었습니다. 제게 가장 깊은 인상을 남기는 학생들은 대개 친절한 마음을 가진 아이들이라는 것입니다. 학업 성취도 중요하지만, 저는 늘 다른 사람을 존중하고 공감하며 배려하는 학생들을 가르칠 때 가장 큰 기쁨을 느낍니다.
One student I remember from South Korea was not the strongest English learner in the class, but she always made an effort to help her classmates. If a new student joined the class, she would be the first to welcome them and make them feel included. In England, I have met similar students who naturally encourage others, celebrate their classmates' successes, and show genuine concern when someone is struggling. These young people remind me that education is about much more than test scores or grammar rules. Character matters, and kindness has a lasting impact on everyone around them.
한국에서 만난 한 학생이 떠오릅니다. 그 학생은 영어 실력이 가장 뛰어난 편은 아니었지만, 언제나 친구들을 도우려고 노력했습니다. 새로운 학생이 오면 가장 먼저 다가가 환영해 주고 자연스럽게 어울릴 수 있도록 배려했습니다. 영국에서도 비슷한 학생들을 많이 만났습니다. 그들은 친구들을 격려하고, 다른 학생의 성공을 함께 기뻐하며, 누군가 어려움을 겪을 때 진심으로 걱정해 주었습니다. 이런 학생들을 보며 저는 교육이 단순히 시험 점수나 문법 규칙 이상의 의미를 가진다는 사실을 다시금 깨닫게 됩니다. 인성은 중요하며, 친절함은 주변 사람들에게 오래도록 긍정적인 영향을 남깁니다.
I also appreciate students who are curious, hardworking, and willing to take risks with their learning. Some of my favourite moments as a teacher come from students who are not afraid to make mistakes and ask questions. Whether it is a shy learner who gradually gains confidence to speak in front of the class or an energetic student whose enthusiasm inspires others, these qualities make teaching incredibly rewarding. Every student brings something unique to the classroom, and often the most memorable lessons come from unexpected places.
저는 또한 호기심이 많고, 성실하며, 배우는 과정에서 실수를 두려워하지 않는 학생들을 좋아합니다. 교사로서 가장 보람 있었던 순간들 중 많은 부분은 실수를 두려워하지 않고 질문하는 학생들로부터 왔습니다. 수줍음이 많던 학생이 점차 자신감을 얻어 앞에 나와 발표하게 되거나, 넘치는 열정으로 친구들에게 긍정적인 영향을 주는 학생을 볼 때 큰 감동을 받습니다. 모든 학생은 교실에 자신만의 특별함을 가져오며, 가장 기억에 남는 배움은 예상치 못한 곳에서 찾아오곤 합니다.
