63. A memorable teacher for me was…

When people ask me where my love of languages comes from, I often think back to two important influences in my life. The first was my mum. She always encouraged curiosity, learning, and exploring the world beyond our own experiences. Looking back, it was really her enthusiasm for learning that first inspired my love of languages and different cultures.

사람들이 제게 언어에 대한 사랑이 어디서 시작됐냐고 물으면, 저는 제 삶에 큰 영향을 준 두 사람을 떠올립니다. 첫 번째는 바로 어머니입니다. 어머니는 언제나 호기심을 갖고 배우며, 자신의 경험 너머의 세상을 탐험하도록 격려해 주셨습니다. 돌이켜보면 언어와 다른 문화에 대한 저의 관심은 어머니의 배움에 대한 열정에서 시작되었다고 생각합니다.

The second influence came when I started learning German in Year 8. That's when I met a teacher who absolutely loved the language. You could see his enthusiasm every time he walked into the classroom. He didn't just teach grammar and vocabulary. He brought in magazines from Germany, played German music, shared stories about the culture, and made the language feel alive. Instead of being just another school subject, German became a doorway to a completely different world.

두 번째 영향은 Year 8 때 독일어를 배우기 시작하면서 찾아왔습니다. 그때 저는 독일어를 진심으로 사랑하는 선생님을 만났습니다. 교실에 들어오는 순간부터 그분의 열정을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 그분은 단순히 문법과 단어만 가르치지 않았습니다. 독일 잡지를 가져오고, 독일 음악을 들려주고, 문화 이야기를 나누며 언어를 살아 있는 것으로 만들어 주셨습니다. 독일어는 더 이상 단순한 학교 과목이 아니라 전혀 새로운 세상으로 통하는 문이 되었습니다.

Looking back, I realise that what inspired me wasn't German itself at first. It was my teacher's passion for the subject. His enthusiasm was contagious. He made learning feel exciting, and he showed me that languages are about people, stories, ideas, and connections rather than simply memorising words. I think many of us remember teachers like that — the ones who don't just teach a subject, but bring it to life.

돌이켜 보면 처음부터 저를 사로잡았던 것은 독일어 자체가 아니었습니다. 그 과목에 대한 선생님의 열정이었습니다. 그분의 열정은 전염성이 있었습니다. 배움을 즐겁게 만들어 주었고, 언어가 단순히 단어를 외우는 것이 아니라 사람과 이야기, 생각, 그리고 연결에 관한 것이라는 사실을 알려 주었습니다. 우리 모두는 그런 선생님을 기억하고 있을 것입니다. 단순히 과목을 가르치는 것이 아니라 그 과목에 생명을 불어넣는 선생님 말입니다.

As teachers, we sometimes forget how much influence we can have on a young person's future. A single enthusiastic teacher can spark an interest that lasts a lifetime.
