German came next, with its fascinating grammar and long words, while Spanish, although taught less often back then, always sounded lively and full of energy. These days, things have shifted. Spanish has taken the top spot as the most popular language to study. It’s fun, useful for travel, and spoken not just in Spain but across much of Latin America and even parts of the United States.

영국의 대부분의 아이들은 학교에서 외국어를 배웁니다. 제가 학생이었을 때는 프랑스어가 단연 가장 인기 있었고, 그다음이 독일어, 그리고 스페인어였습니다. 당시 프랑스어를 배우는 것은 일종의 통과의례처럼 느껴졌습니다. 누구나 bonjour나 je m’appelle… 같은 기본 표현을 알고 있었고, 수업 시간에는 파리, 크루아상, 에펠탑에 대해 자주 이야기하곤 했습니다. 그다음으로는 복잡한 문법과 긴 단어들이 매력적인 독일어가 있었고, 스페인어는 당시에는 자주 가르쳐지지 않았지만 언제나 활기차고 생동감 넘치는 언어로 느껴졌습니다. 요즘에는 상황이 바뀌었습니다. 이제 스페인어가 가장 인기 있는 외국어로 자리 잡았죠. 배우기 재미있고 여행할 때 유용하며, 스페인뿐 아니라 라틴 아메리카와 미국의 일부 지역에서도 널리 사용되기 때문입니다.

Personally, I’ve always thought that learning a language isn’t just about memorising grammar rules or vocabulary lists. It’s about connection — connecting with people, with ideas, and with the world beyond your own. Even learning a few words or phrases can make a difference.
