4. Remember, Remember the 5th of November

“Remember, remember the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason, and plot.” Those words always take me back to my childhood. As a young boy, Bonfire Night was one of the highlights of the year—an evening filled with excitement, color, and warmth. This year, I had the pleasure of reliving that magic by taking my family along to a local park for a bonfire and firework display. None of us were disappointed; it was a truly memorable evening.

“11월 5일을 기억하라, 화약과 반역과 음모를.” 이 말은 언제나 내 어린 시절을 떠올리게 한다. 어릴 적 나는 불꽃놀이의 밤을 1년 중 가장 기다리던 행사 중 하나로 꼽았다. 설렘과 색채, 따뜻함이 가득한 저녁이었다. 올해는 가족과 함께 근처 공원에서 모닥불과 불꽃놀이를 즐기며 그 마법 같은 순간을 다시 느낄 수 있었다. 우리 모두 기대 이상이었고, 정말 잊을 수 없는 밤이었다.

I’ve never been much of a fan of Halloween, which comes just a week earlier. The costumes and spooky decorations never quite captured my imagination the way Bonfire Night did. For me, November 5th has always held a special place—something to look forward to as the nights grow colder and darker. The crackling of the fire, the smell of smoke in the air, and the anticipation of the first firework lighting up the sky all bring a wonderful sense of nostalgia.

나는 일주일 전인 핼러윈의 팬은 아니었다. 복장이나 무서운 장식들은 나의 흥미를 자극하지 못했다. 하지만 불꽃놀이의 밤은 언제나 특별했다. 날이 점점 추워지고 어두워질 때쯤 찾아오는 11월 5일은 내게 늘 기다림의 의미였다. 모닥불이 타는 소리, 공기 중의 연기 냄새, 그리고 하늘을 밝히는 첫 불꽃에 대한 설렘은 언제나 그리운 추억을 떠올리게 한다.

This year’s celebration was everything I hoped it would be. The fireworks were spectacular—bursts of color dancing against the night sky—and the bonfire was truly fantastic, casting a golden glow over the crowd. We shared the evening with friends, chatting and laughing as we watched the display together. It was one of those simple, joyful nights that remind you how special traditions like this can be.

올해의 축제는 내 기대를 완벽하게 충족시켰다. 불꽃놀이는 정말 환상적이었고, 밤하늘을 수놓는 색색의 불빛이 춤을 추듯 터졌다. 모닥불은 사람들의 얼굴을 금빛으로 물들였다. 우리는 친구들과 함께 그 시간을 보내며 이야기하고 웃었다. 이런 단순하지만 행복한 밤은 이런 전통이 얼마나 소중한지 다시금 깨닫게 해준다.
